Liberty Ammo Bear Country Lede

What ammunition should you pack for a backcountry trip where bears might be present? That's a long-standing and important debate, and Liberty Ammunition has just offered a new data point: Bear Country in 9mm and 10mm chamberings. The company touts this new cartridge as offering more stopping power than the competition.

Liberty's take on "bear medicine" includes a hard 100% copper projectile, designed to smash through bone instead of "mushrooming." Per Gary Ramey, CEO of Liberty, "We designed Bear Country to penetrate bear fat and hit with devastating stopping power. We bust through bone, as opposed to lead projectiles that smush when they strike a hard material (like bone). You don’t want a bullet that behaves like bubblegum when facing down a grizzly.”

Bear Country 9mm hits with a whopping 518 ft.-lbs of stopping power, while the 10mm hits with 685 ft.-lbs. The Florida-based Liberty Ammunition is currently distributing Bear Country through Chattanooga Shooters Supply, Skagit Arms, Bullseye Gun Vault, Fuquay Gun & Gold, Gunnies, Rocky Mountain Discount Sports, JK Outdoors, and online. MSRPs range from $34.99 to $39.99 depending upon caliber chosen; LibertyAmmo.com
