If you’ve ever taken a friend or loved one to the range for the first time, you’ve felt the warm glow that comes from sharing your love for the shooting sports. Those intangible benefits are beyond price, but with the NRA Mentor Sweepstakes, you can also win some very tangible prizes.
From April 15 through July 5, we’re encouraging NRA Members to introduce newcomers to shooting and safe gun-handling practices with the NRA Mentor Sweepstakes. The NRA Mentor Sweepstakes, which is part of the NRA Mentor Initiative organized by NRA Publications, is the brainchild of NRA Publications Executive Director Doug Hamlin and Marketing Manager James Handlon.
How did this initiative come about? Says Handlon, “NRA Members have the chance to secure the future of the Second Amendment by helping to teach a new shooter the responsible use of guns. There are five million NRA Members; if every NRA Member were to take just one person to the range for the first time, we’d see a huge increase in support for our gun rights.” Continues Handlon, “We thought, why don’t we ask NRA Members to take a new shooter to the range, or a neighbor or friend, and we’ll get sponsors involved and put up some prizes to reward them.”
The response from the firearms and gear industry was overwhelming; some terrific prizes are up for grabs, including an EAA Witness P Match Pro 9mm pistol, EAA Witness P Match 9mm pistol, a Taurus Spectrum pistol, $100 gift cards to Winchester or the NRA Store, or a pair of GSM Walker Razor X digital ear buds.
The NRA Mentor Initiative is all about helping new shooters get past the “intimidation factor” that some people feel when approaching the sport for the first time. Says Handlon, “I remember when I walked into the NRA range the first time. I thought, I don’t know anybody, I’m here by myself, I have a pistol I’ve only fired once. What do I do now?” Having a knowledgeable, trained guide, continues Handlon, will help ease the learning experience.
