Mossberg 990 Aftershock

When looking for a firearm dedicated to home defense, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by options that promise more features than most folks will ever use. Mossberg's 990 AfterShock, just introduced this year, stands apart for exactly the opposite reason, as its design is purpose-built, straightforward, and geared towards giving you exactly what you need ... and nothing you don’t. Legally classified as an “Other” firearm under federal law, it does not fall into the shotgun category, though it does take 12-gauge shells. What that classification means for most people is a shorter overall package that’s easier to maneuver in tight quarters, such as hallways or other similar areas within a home.

The overall size of the AfterShock is what stands out most. With a 14.75" barrel and an overall length of just 27.125", it’s shorter than most long guns, which makes a tremendous difference in tight spaces like hallways or doorframes. That shorter length is more than just a convenience; it is a safety advantage when seconds matter, and maneuverability is of utmost importance. Additionally, its 5+1 capacity provides ample rounds to address a threat without introducing the complexity or bulk of extended tubes or detachable magazines.

This gun’s unique grip fits effortlessly in your hand and allows for a natural angle for your wrist, allowing for better retention and smooth follow-up shots. This feature fits a wide range of users, whether you have extensive experience or are brand-new to the world of home defense. Up front, the forend includes a strap that helps keep the support hand in place during the firing process. This, combined with an overall weight of 6 lbs., results in a platform that feels quite agile instead of other oversized, unwieldy options on the market.

The 990 AfterShock operates using a gas-driven semi-automatic action, which cycles smoothly while reducing felt recoil. This system allows for faster follow-up shots, which is essential when faced with an adrenaline-filled defensive scenario. Mossberg has long earned a reputation for building reliable autoloaders, and while this new addition to their defensive guns is short in stature, it certainly does not run short on reliability. It’s built to run a wide variety of 12-gauge loads and is simple to clean… what more could you ask for?

Keeping things simple, Mossberg opted to forgo fancy electronics or optics in their design, and instead chose to focus on the bare essentials needed in a defensive situation. For most defensive encounters within the home, engagement distances are short, and the ability to quickly bring the firearm up and aim it is more important than fine-tuned accuracy, especially when you consider that you’re most likely going to be shooting buckshot.

The compact footprint and light weight make the 990 AfterShock especially manageable for just about anyone looking to give it a try, especially those who might find a traditional 12-gauge long gun intimidating. During our live-fire testing, the grip angle and overall ergonomics of this gun lent to a surprisingly pleasurable shooting experience. Sure, there’s still noticeable movement … it is a 12-gauge, after all, but the energy is distributed in a way that doesn’t leave you wincing and regretting pulling the trigger. Having a great deal of control translates into confidence during use, and almost certainly means you’ll be more apt to practice with it at the range to keep your skills fresh.

This gun shone when it came to maneuvering around corners and other areas where movement becomes more restricted. Transitioning from low-ready to a firing position was a very smooth and natural process. Even when loaded to full capacity, the gun remained well-balanced and had no impact on maneuverability or transitions. For testing, we used two different types of 12-gauge ammunition. The first was Fiocchi’s Exacta 00 Buckshot, filled with nine nickel-plated pellets in a 2¾" shell. This load is designed for smoother cycling and reduced recoil.

The second load came from Buffalo Cartridge Company, utilizing a #4 Buckshot configuration with 27 pellets in a 2¾" shell. This load offers a wider spread, making it effective for home defense scenarios where over-penetration is a concern. Both loads cycled without any issue to speak of. This, when combined with the gun’s consistent ejection and predictable recoil patterns, confirmed the platform’s compatibility with a variety of defensive buckshot options.

In addition to the base model, Mossberg offers two other configurations, each offering slight differences catering to the unique preferences of their customer base. The AfterShock 990 18.5” mirrors the base model in terms of specs and function but extends the barrel length another 3.75". The second variant is the 990 AfterShock LaserSaddle. This option includes Mossberg’s integrated LaserSaddle, which features a red laser sight mounted on the receiver, enhancing target acquisition in low-light settings without the need for additional rail-mounted optics. These two variants utilize the same gas-operated semi-automatic action with a 5+1 capacity, allowing users to select a configuration that aligns best with their personal preferences or home defense needs.

The 990 AfterShock may not have a long list of add-ons or tactical accessories, but it doesn’t need them. What Mossberg has delivered to their consumers is a no-frills, capable, and dependable option for anyone looking to secure their home with a 12-gauge platform that is easier to handle than a traditional long gun. For families considering a practical addition to their home defense plan, the 990 Aftershock offers the kind of reliability and usability that allow you to remain confident in your ability to defend your home and those you love.
