If you are or know a woman who's interested in learning gun safety, shooting sports techniques and information on self defense, Michigan's Hillsdale College has got a great opportunity for you. The college is once again offering its annual Ladies for Liberty seminar and shooting camp to attendees of 21 and up, which will take place June 5 through 9, 2016. The camp, which teaches women of all experience levels shooting sports techniques and gun safety, still has limited openings left for enrollment.

Hillsdale's Ladies for Liberty Shooting Camp covers a broad range of topics and activities. Participants will experience an introduction to handgun function and operation led by competitive shooter Sheila Hoekstra, a seminar on the Constitution from a Hillsdale College faculty member, a course on self-defense at home and away, a comparison of semi-automatic pistols and revolvers, a Refuse To Be A Victim course, and an introduction to clay-target shooting led by Halter Shooting Center Range Master Bart Spieth.

Ladies for Liberty will take place at Hillsdale College’s John A. Halter Shooting Sports Education Center, a 105-acre, state-of–the-art training facility just 5 miles from the College’s main campus in Hillsdale. Michigan. An enrollment fee of $1,200 covers lodging, meals, lectures and receptions at the Dow Conference Center on the Hillsdale College campus, as well as all lessons held at the Halter Shooting Sports Education Center. The fee also covers light-recoiling handguns available for shooters to use; attendees may bring their own firearms upon approval by event staff in advance.

“The Ladies for Liberty Shooting Camp is a great way for women of all experience levels and backgrounds to meet other women who are interested in the shooting sports,” said Hoekstra, certified National Rifle Association instructor and one of the camp’s coaches. “The atmosphere helps women feel like they can ask anything, enabling them to learn more effectively and erasing the stereotype of shooting sports as a male-only hobby.”

Given Hillsdale's history, it's no surprise that this institution of higher education is reaching out to female shooters this way. Hillsdale was the first American college to prohibit in its charter any discrimination based on race, religion or sex, and became an early force for the abolition of slavery. It was also the second college in the nation to grant four-year liberal arts degrees to women.
