Smith & Wesson’s Model 1854 Lever Action marries the rich heritage of lever-action rifles with the hard-hitting, versatile nature of the .44 Magnum cartridge, offering a unique shooting experience that appeals to hunters and shooting enthusiasts alike. The .44 Magnum cartridge offers a range of loading options, from lighter target rounds to heavy-hitting hunting loads, further enhancing the rifle's adaptability. This design, deeply rooted in the history of American firearms, offers a nostalgic yet practical appeal.

The lever action is smooth and reliable, allowing for quick follow-up shots. This makes the rifle well-suited for hunting scenarios where speed and accuracy are paramount. The action cycles seamlessly, with a satisfying click speaking to the precision engineering behind this gun. Well-balanced, the 1854 is easy to carry and maneuver, whether trekking through the woods or navigating a shooting range.

Upon handling, the quality of its construction is immediately evident. The rifle boasts a solid, well-balanced feel, with a weight that suggests durability without being cumbersome ... just what you are looking for when venturing into the woods in search of that elusive whitetail. The classic design elements of the 1854 are enhanced by modern touches, resulting in a rifle that looks as good as it performs. The polished walnut stock features thoughtfully placed checkering, providing a positive grip on the gun for hands both gloved and bare. The blued finish of the metal components adds a layer of corrosion resistance, while contributing to the rifle's overall sleek and polished look.

Chambered in .44 Magnum, the Model 1854 is a hard-hitting yet soft-shooting rifle. The .44 Magnum cartridge is known for its stopping power and versatility, capable of taking down medium to large game with ease. Once range day rolled around, we put two of our favorite loadings to the test: Federal’s 230gr Hydra-Shok JHP and Hornady’s 300gr XTP.

And, because we like our neighbors, we also opted to install Silencer Central’s Banish 46 suppressor on the business end of the threaded barrel. For those looking to do the same, the thread pitch on this gun is 11/16-24. This can is compatible with over 25 different calibers, ranging from 9mm up to 45-70. If you are considering saving up for a suppressor of your own, the Banish 46 will cover your sound suppression needs now and well into the future.

While this rifle does come with iron sights, it is also topped with a Picatinny rail, allowing for the easy installation of a scope. We opted to top ours off with a Steiner H6Xi 2-12x42 riflescope. Boasting exceptional clarity and a robust build strong enough to withstand mother nature’s harshest conditions, this scope was crafted with hunters in mind. Its wide field of view allows you to keep eyes on and around your intended target, while the HD glass facilitates seeing every last detail of the game you seek … or, in our case, defenseless paper targets!

With gear in tow, it was time to sling some lead downrange, and let me tell you, neither option let us down. Consistently delivering tight groupings at our testing distance of 100 yards, our Hornady loading pulled just ahead of Federal with an average group size of 1.25" as compared to Federal's 1.75". I wouldn't hesitate to bring either option on a hunt, especially since all rounds fed flawlessly through every cycle of the oversized lever.

With the addition of our Banish 46, the typical ruckus that .44 Magnum would normally cause was brought down to a very comfortable level. The design of the stock and the recoil pad work together to absorb much of the felt recoil, making the rifle very comfortable to shoot even during extended sessions. This is a significant advantage for hunters who may need to take multiple shots in quick succession or for target shooters spending long hours at the range.

The S&W Model 1854 Lever Action 44 Magnum is a remarkable firearm that blends traditional design with modern performance. Its quality construction, reliable action, and multi-use 44 Magnum chambering make it a versatile and dependable choice for a variety of shooting applications. Smith & Wesson has succeeded in creating a lever-action rifle that not only honors its historical roots but also meets the demands of contemporary shooters. Whether used for hunting, target shooting or simply as a prized addition to a firearm collection, the Model 1854 stands out as a model of excellence and reliability. MSRP $1,279 - $1,399, depending upon model chosen. Smith-Wesson.com.
