When Smith & Wesson introduced its Model 940 wheelgun back in 1991, it was perhaps just a bit ahead of its time. Similar in appearance to the 640, the 940 used moon clips to load, and extract from, its five-shot cylinder. Chambered in 9mm, the small concealed-carry-ready revolver was only produced until 1998, when S&W retired the platform. However, the 940 had gained a cult following, and it remained a hot ticket for collectors.
Now, Davidson’s, one of the nation’s top firearms, ammunition, optics, cutlery, and accessories wholesalers, has collaborated with Smith & Wesson to reintroduce the Model 940. Built on what S&W calls its "J-Frame," which is the smallest frame size that Smith & Wesson makes, this is a purpose-built CCW gun. The double-action-only (DAO) mechanism means that S&W can "shroud" or conceal the hammer.
Naturally, Davidson's and S&W chose to add some modern improvements and aesthetics. The concealed hammer helps create a snag-free design essential to concealed carry. The barrel, frame, and cylinder all feature a stainless steel finish that's complimented by the VZ Diamond Black Cherry grips. The grips themselves are contoured to allow the use of the included moon clips.
A serrated u-notch rear sight is paired with an XS Tritium night sight up front. The 2.17” barrel and the five-shot cylinder are fluted. Three moon clips are included. The gun's overall width is a mere 1.31", and weighs in at 23.52 ozs. MSRP is set at $999, however, consumers will likely enjoy a lower price at their local Davidson’s FFL retailer or through GalleryofGuns.com.
