Human beings may be the world's apex predator, but it's important to remember that we're not the only predators out there in the fields. What's more, there will be times when we're pursuing the same game as those other predators. This is especially true when we're talking about smaller game animals like turkeys, which are always on the menu for coyotes and bobcats. Those coyotes and bobcats generally aren't interested in getting close to us, but they would very much like to get to that gobbler before we can.
That's exactly what happened to Winchester Deadly Passion ambassador and NRAWomen.com writer Melissa Bachman on a turkey hunt. Although Bachman regularly uses shotguns to turkey hunt--the most common method--she also likes to mix it up and challenge herself by bowhunting those boss gobblers. The effective range is fairly similar to a shotgun, but since there's no expanding cloud of shot pellets, accuracy is absolutely critical.
Set up in her blind with her decoys, Bachman began calling. It worked, and a big tom started to come in ... but it also worked on the local predators, who thought they were hearing the sounds of an easy meal. What do you do in this situation? Will the predator ruin your chances of shooting a turkey? In this great video, you'll learn all about what tends to happen, and how you should react.
