Great News for Would-Be Junior Hunters in Idaho

It's a dilemma: We all know that the upcoming generation is the future of hunting and support for the Second Amendment, but so many families have no choice but to live in areas where hunting opportunities are slim. These means that several generations might wind up completely disconnected from the sport and tradition of hunting. The good news is that the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) in the Upper Snake Region has a remedy for that. They're focusing on juniors who are between the ages of 10 and 15 who have no experience, and no family members who can mentor them. The IDFG will be offering a number of mentored youth hunts throughout the upcoming upland game and waterfowl seasons. It's a great deal: IDFG will provide a mentor and all equipment that the junior will need. The only thing that the kids will need to provide for themselves is a  junior hunting license or hunter passport before the hunt. (The kids also need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during the hunt.)

Regional Volunteer Services Coordinator James Brower said, "The purpose of this program is to get youth that would not have an opportunity otherwise into the field with an experienced mentor and an adult family member that can continue to take them out hunting in the future. We plan on having tons of fun and making lifelong memories for both the youth and their hunting buddy."

If you are interested in this event or know a young person that might be, please fill out an application at the IDFG office located at 4279 Commerce Circle in Idaho Falls. Applications must be turned in by October 15, and preference will be given to applications turned in early. For questions about participating in this program contact James Brower at (208) 525-7290 or through the Idaho Relay Service at 1-800-377-3529 (TDD) or by email at [email protected].
