If you're like many women new to shooting and the outdoors, you may find it easier to gain and hone your skills in the presence of other women. And if you're like me, you find it much more fun in a beautiful natural setting. Toward that end, Vermont Outdoors Woman sponsors regular outdoor education retreats for women 18 and up, called Doe Camps. This September 18 through 20, the Fall Doe Camp will be held in Canaan, Vermont. The Camp will offer three days of classes to be held in the woods, in the lodge, on the lake and on the beach as Vermont's famous leaf season begins.

Doe Camp organizers say they will be returning to Jackson's Lodge & Log Cabins, a 56-year family tradition that provides heated lakefront cabins on beautiful Lake Wallace. Located in Vermont's moose country, Jackson's Cafe is a local favorite for homemade breakfast and baked goods (including gluten free). Proprietor Gloria Jackson and her staff are once again pulling out all the stops to make this the best Fall Doe Camp ever. There will even be a venison barbecue on Saturday evening.

Doe Campers assure you that the lakeside log cabins at Jackson's Lodge combine a rustic and relaxing family-friendly atmosphere with all the modern necessities you'll need during your weekend retreat. Campers can bring sleeping bags or rent linens. More hardy campers may choose to bring their tents and save money by camping out.

With over 40 classes taught by  passionate and experienced instructors, campers choose from a list of popular classes that include: Mountain & Road Biking, Firearms (Muzzleloader, Handgun, Rifle and Clay Shooting) Marksmanship & Safety, Healing Capacity of Trees, Log Rolling, Critter Calling, Fly Fishing, Wild Plants, Archery, Kayaking, Birding, Wilderness Survival, Ax Skills, Fire Starting, Maple Sugaring and Panning for Gold. Early morning classes at Doe Camp include yoga and birding. The weekend will begin with an optional free Women's Hunter Education Field Course on Friday morning, Sept 18th.

New classes include: Birding Brousseau Mountain, Gourmet Outdoor Cooking, Wild Gourmet Mushrooms, Birding the Averill Ponds, Cheese Making at Home, Nature Journaling, Reflective Writing, Introduction to Filipino Martial Arts, Primitive Weapons, Knife/Tomahawk Throwing and more. Between classes there will be ample free time to explore or just relax on the sandy beach or the cabin porch...and the evening campfires are always popular. A large raffle is held on Sunday after lunch with thousands of dollars' worth of items going to the lucky winners.

Don't miss the opportunity to receive affordable outdoor education in a stress-free, supportive environment. Cost for the weekend program is $370. Discounts are available for daily drive-ins, camping, mother/daughter teams, and girlfriend groups of three or more.

Sponsored in part by Vermont Outdoors Woman, Jackson's Lodge, Vermont Fish & Wildlife, Vermont Outdoor Guide Association, R & L Archery, Vermont Field Sports and Waitsfield Telecom. Visit their website for more information.
