The National Shooting Sports Federations (NSSF) has teamed up with 29 state fish and wildlife departments to encourage American hunters to be S.A.F.E this season by handling, transporting and storing firearms properly.

S.A.F.E stands for:

Secure your firearm when not in use

be Aware of those around you who should not have unauthorized access to firearms

Focus on your responsibility as a firearm owner

Educate yourself and others about safe firearm handling and storage

“At a time of year when more firearms are likely to be taken out of storage, transported and used in the field, we want to emphasize the steps hunters should take to handle and store firearms properly and securely,” Said Steve Sanetti, NSSF president and CEO.

The Hunt S.A.F.E program offers informational brochures and materials that promote a safe and useful message to hunters this fall. The materials include a Hunting Checklist for Families, Gun Storage for Your Lifestyle, The Ethical Hunter and the Project ChildSafe webpage features safety resources and directions on how to get your own firearm safety kit and gun lock.

In reference to Arkansas Fish & Game Commission and Iowa Department of Natural Resources, who have already implemented Hunt S.A.F.E materials into their newsletters and hunter education courses, Sanetti said “These agencies are making an important contribution in reminding firearm owners to ‘own it, respect it and secure it.' We look forward to more agencies joining the effort in the weeks and months ahead.”
