As a leader in American gun manufacturing, Ruger brings a veritable battalion of engineers—140 in all!—to the design table...and their latest offering, the Ruger American 9mm semi-automatic handgun, shows the level of care and attention to detail they offer. In this video, American Rifleman's Brian Sheetz sits down with this brand-new addition to Ruger's pistol lineup to discuss and display its features. As you'll see, this semi-automatic was created from the ground up to offer you the out-of-the-box shooting experience you've dreamed of. Small enough to conceal and carry discreetly, this gun is rich with ergonomic and functional features. With adjustable grips, a blade trigger, ambidextrous controls and real, combat-style Novak sights, the Ruger American 9mm pistol clearly has a lot of design expertise in its pedigree.

This 17-round, striker-fired handgun also offers ease of disassembly. It's not necessary to depress the trigger in order to release the slide; all the user needs to do is lock the slide back, rotate the takedown bar, release the lock and slide the top of the gun right off. That's a real boon for those of us who have burned the Three Rules of Gun Safety into our minds. After all, it's difficult to force yourself to put your finger on a trigger and squeeze when you aren't on target and ready to fire—no matter how many times you verify the gun isn't loaded and is pointed in a safe direction.

Is this the handgun that, as Sheetz says, "represents what pistols will look like for years to come"? Check out this video and be the judge!
