We hunt for so many reasons: Carrying on a family tradition, seeking a deeper connection with Nature, and, of course, for the meat. But how much meat can you expect when you're hunting whitetail deer? In this great short video from our friends at the National Deer Association (NDA), you'll learn a quick "rule of thumb" that will give you a solid estimate.
It's important to note that the question of how much meat a whitetail will yield is complicated by more than the size of the deer. What parts you're willing to eat matter, too! For example, it's quite common for some hunters to consume organ meat like the liver and heart. Some hunters also make sure to save the "lesser cuts" of the deer (for example, from the legs) for use in stews. Practices like these significantly increase the yield, but many hunters aren't prepared or willing to follow them as a matter of personal taste (no pun intended).
