If you're looking for a compact survival gun that gives you the choice between a rifle and a shotgun, check out our video review of the Savage Arms Model 42 Takedown. Although the concept of an over/under, shotgun/rifle combination is not a new one, Savage Arms has added thoughtful innovations that make the new Takedown perfect for your backpack, truck or bug-out bag.

This neat little long gun offers a .22LR barrel on top and a .410 bore barrel underneath, so it offers protection against all manner of varmints and critters like rodents and snakes while allowing you to hunt small game in survival situations. At a trim 6 pounds, 2 ounces, the Model 42 disassembles into two pieces for compact storage. The process to reassemble the firearm into working condition is simple and intuitive, so with a little practice it can be taken from your emergency stash and made usable in a matter of seconds. Check out our video from American Rifleman's Chris Olsen, demonstrating the gun's features and operation.
