The Outdoor Foundation, an organization that connects youth to the outdoors, and Aramark, a food and hospitality partner for national and state parks, awarded five universities Outdoor Nation Activation Grants to increase outdoor recreation on their campuses. The winning schools were awarded $3,000 in grants for their best proposals to engage their campus communities in outdoor recreation. The winning schools were Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado, University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, University of California Merced in Merced, California, University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, and University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Grant requirements include an initial campus event to engage new students in the outdoors, ongoing outdoor activation, two outdoor activities with local youth-serving organizations and a National Park outing. Also, each university must organize at least five outdoor outings over the course of six months.
